ChonkyPlants is a succulent-care app. It is designed to work without user
accounts and to keep your data on your own device. There is a single
exception, and it is opt-in: if you choose to share a corner with the people
you live with, that particular corner is stored on our server. See below.
Data stored on your device (which never leaves it)
Your plant collection, each plant's conditions (light, watering, substrate) and your watering notes.
The name you choose for the home-screen greeting.
The care cards of the plants you add (downloaded and cached locally).
The photos you take of your plants.
All of this lives only on your phone as long as you do not share a corner. Uninstalling the
app deletes it.
Shared corners (optional Premium feature)
You can create a shared corner to look after the same plants together with
the people you live with. It is your explicit choice: until you make it, none of this happens
and your corners keep living only on your phone.
When you share a corner:
What is uploaded: the plants in that corner (the name you gave them,
care card, size, conditions), their pots, your saved substrates, the watering notes, the
wishlist and the memorial. Also the photos of the plants in that corner, in
a reduced version (the original stays on your phone).
Who can see it: only whoever has the invite code and
uses it to join. The code is the key: give it only to people you want to see your plants. You
can change it whenever you like, and the previous one stops working.
What is NOT uploaded: your other corners, the app settings, your watering
reminder time and your install identifier.
With what identity: we still never ask for an account or an email. The
app creates an anonymous session for you (a random identifier issued by
Supabase) used only to check that you belong to the corner. Alongside it we store the
name you typed in the greeting, so the corner can say who watered. If you
never set one, none is stored.
Where: on Supabase, European Union region, like everything else.
If you leave: you lose access to that corner and its photos, and your
membership is deleted. One honest caveat: whatever had already been downloaded to
your phone (or to someone else's) while you were members is already downloaded —
that cannot be undone, just as showing someone a photo cannot be undone. What we do
guarantee is that from then on the server hands nothing further to whoever left.
Deleting a corner: if every member leaves, nobody can see the corner any
more. To have it deleted from the server entirely, write to the address at the end and we
will remove it.
Data that reaches our servers
Searches: when you search for a plant, the query text is sent to our
database (hosted on Supabase, European Union region) to return results. Searches with no
results are logged anonymously (the query text only — no user or device
identifiers) so we know which care cards to add next.
Photos for identification: if you use photo identification, the image
is sent through our server to the Pl@ntNet service, which returns candidate species.
We do not store the photo: it is forwarded and discarded. The scan outcome
(which species was suggested and which one you confirmed) is logged
anonymously to improve the care database. The photo only leaves your phone
when you tap the scan button. Along with the photo travels an anonymous
installation identifier: a random code that contains no personal data and cannot
reveal who you are, used solely to limit the number of daily scans per installation
(anti-abuse protection). We store only that code and a per-day counter; if you reinstall
the app, the code is regenerated.
Describing the spot in your own words (optional Premium feature): if in
"How am I doing?" you choose to write where you keep the plant instead of answering the
questions, that text is sent to Google (Gemini) through our server, solely
to translate it into one of our options (for example "morning direct sun"). We
do not store it: it is forwarded and discarded, and the installation code
is NOT sent to Google (it stays on our server, only for the daily counter). You
should know this before using it: we use Gemini's free tier, and on that tier
Google may use the submitted content to improve its products and services, and human
reviewers may read it (disconnected from our account). If you are in the European Economic
Area, Switzerland or the UK, Google applies its paid terms to the free tier too and does
not use the content for training. So: do not write personal
information in that field — describe the light and the substrate, nothing else.
And you never need it: the usual questions are free, work offline, send nothing to anyone
and are just as accurate.
There are no accounts, no ads, no third-party analytics, and we do not sell or share
data. The only identifier we use is the installation code described above: random,
anonymous and unconnected to your identity.
Third-party services
Supabase (database, eu-west-1, European Union): serves care cards and
receives search queries.
Pl@ntNet (plant identification by photo, a European project): receives
the photo you choose to scan, solely to suggest candidate species. The example photos shown
next to the results are loaded from their public servers when displayed. Their policy:
plantnet.org/privacy-statement.
Google (Gemini): only if you use the optional Premium feature to
describe your plant's spot in your own words, and it only receives that text. See the
detail and the warning above. Their terms:
ai.google.dev/gemini-api/terms.
RevenueCat (subscription management): processes the purchase and your
subscription status. Payment is taken by Google Play; we never see or store your card
details. Their policy:
revenuecat.com/privacy.
Your rights
Since personal data lives on your device, deleting it is in your hands (app settings or
uninstalling). For any question or request about search data, write to us and we will sort
it out.
